BURGLARIES REPORTED  - July 2009

Sheds and trailers continue to be broken into and personal property has been reported missing including:  Two ATVs on a trailer, batteries, generators, solar panels, a dryer, shop tools, and an air compressor.

A neighbor suffered ~$18,000 in theft losses this past winter when their steel storage building, battery shed, and fifth wheel trailer were broken into.

Recently, another neighbor reported a bright light shined into their bedroom window around midnight. After turning on their outside lights and checking around the property, there was no sign of an intruder but a shed door had been left open. No losses reported.

Controlling Mice in your RV

Take laundry softener sheets and spread throughout your RV, especially under sinks or near drain pipes.  Mice have an aversion to softener sheets.  Also, take steel wool and pack around your pipes where mice and pack rats usually enter.  They don't like crawling through the steel wool.

Overvaccinating your Pets can be Harmful

Veterinarians say too many vaccines are unhealthy for dogs and cats and some are genetically more vulnerable than others for vaccine induced immune and brain system damage.  Veterinarian Rick Palmquist says vaccines can remain effective for years, without booster shots.  He did a survey of over 100,000 dogs who were vaccinated once for distemper and parvo virus.  In every case, those who were tested and did not get boosters have remained healthy, "The vaccine was doing what we wanted it to do without causing increased illness from overuse."  Over-vaccination has been suspected in causing tumors in some cats and immune problems in dogs. Dr. Palmquist says if you're getting your pet vaccinated, here's a simple plan:  Start with the basics like rabies, distemper, and parvo virus, and then consult with your vet.  In making your decisions be aware of local pet laws when considering whether or not to have your pet vaccinated yearly.  Dr. Palmquist says that German shepards, rottweilers, and poodles seem to be at higher risk for adverse vaccine reactions.

LIGHTNING

"If you can see it, flee it; if you can hear it, clear it."

PLAN in advance your evacuation and safety measures. When you first see lightning or hear thunder, activate your emergency plan. Now is the time to go to a building or a vehicle. Lightning often precedes rain, so don't wait for the rain to begin before suspending activities.

IF OUTDOORS...Avoid water. Avoid the high ground. Avoid open spaces. Avoid all metal objects including electric wires, fences, machinery, motors, power tools, etc. Unsafe places include underneath canopies, small picnic or rain shelters, or near trees. Where possible, find shelter in a substantial building or in a fully enclosed metal vehicle such as a car, truck or a van with the windows completely shut. If lightning is striking nearby when you are outside, you should:

A. Crouch down. Put feet together. Place hands over ears to minimize hearing damage from thunder.

B. Avoid proximity (minimum of 15 ft.) to other people.

IF INDOORS... Avoid water. Stay away from doors and windows. Do not use the telephone. Take off head sets. Turn off, unplug, and stay away from appliances, computers, power tools, & TV sets. Lightning may strike exterior electric and phone lines, inducing shocks to inside equipment.

SUSPEND ACTIVITIES for 30 minutes after the last observed lightning or thunder.

INJURED PERSONS do not carry an electrical charge and can be handled safely. Apply First Aid procedures to a lightning victim if you are qualified to do so. Call 911 or send for help immediately.

KNOW YOUR EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBERS.
